On today’s Fourth of July I am having a real hankering to be swimming in a lake off of a boat and grilling. It’s really the only way to spend the holiday. Which got me to thinking: When was the last time I had such a Fourth of July?
I went to iPhoto and started browsing photos from past July 4′s. I was surprised to realize that I haven’t spent one in the States since 2006. And even then I was ‘away’ doing an artist residency, alone at a cabin on 20 acres of land on the St. Croix River. According to my photos, I spent that day hunting wildflowers. Above are the photos from that day.
Not sure what we are going to do today, but it is a holiday related to place and not being in the ‘right’ place makes it a little bit hard to celebrate properly.
What are you doing/did you do for the Fourth?

Happy post-4th July!
The hostas are still growing over themselves, so I spent the better part of the day re-arranging them. Often as I dig them up the original species tag is found, the names are amusing; Baby Blue, Bridegroom, Permanent Wave, Green Eyes, Spilt Milk…
A stranger walking by stopped to play fetch with Kay, NE is great that way.
Grilled dry aged steak – fireworks over Nicollet Island (viewed from the front yard) – then a late night round of “blinky ball fetch” in the park, the air was thick with firework smoke

That sounds like a fantastic 4th. Your hosta garden is so beautiful—and yes I forget, too, how funny their names are. Love the little story about NE. Wonderful images of a 4th of July day and evening. Thanks for sharing, Jody!!
I tried to get some grilling in the park going but we got rained out at the last minute. Ended up with two of my German besties at an outdoor cafe, talking about the ways of Americans and Germans. Yikes! But fun!
