The Land of Sky Blue Waters

I was looking through my friend Bob’s Flickr photos this morning and came across this little beauty from Superior, WI.

The Hamm’s ‘From the Land of Sky Blue Waters’ ad campaign is all about evoking and using mythical place. The slogan, the idealized landscape imagery and the jingle create an idea of place that is Utopian but also familiar, especially to Northerners, whose landscape played a primary role in the advertising.

The ad campaigns used references to Minnesota’s lakes, forests and woodland creatures to promote the idea of a refreshing beer. Watch one of the commercials below and you will also hear a suspicious reference to stereotypical Native American drum beats.

For further fascinating looking, visit the Action Squad, who explored the abandoned Hamm’s Brewery site in a mission they rated as one of their best.

  • mike and i used to go to the lake home of the guy who inherited the hamm’s fortune! he was a total kook. we used to canoe across the lake to the bar where there were pressed tin hamms signs on the walls, and paddle back under the stars all silly.
